The Downfall of a Pregnant Speed Coder

16 years ago, I started my career as a computer programmer and was loving the fact that I was doing the same thing in school but instead of having to suffer through exams, I got paid instead! Even back then, I would morph into a monster when I got into my "coding zone". A note would be stuck to the back of my chair with the sentence, "I am coding". People learned to stay away and I was left to speed type my hundreds and thousands lines of code in peace. I would start my days early and finish late as I was so consumed by my work. Occasionally, my fingers would lock up and it would take 10 seconds or so before I could move them again. That was when I first heard about Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. I learned that most computer programmers suffer from it. I was only 22, it was not possible... As I grew older, my career progressed and I coded less and less. There were times when my speed coding services were needed but it got progressively lesser and lesser. I forgot all about Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

3 months ago, my right hand started to get tingly sensations and would fall asleep at night. When the same thing began to happen night after night, I googled my old friend again. I learnt that 20% of pregnant women suffer from it just because the body accumulates too much water and blocks the little Carpal Tunnel nerve. There is basically nothing a pregnant woman can do about it as pain relievers such as steroids cannot be taken while being pregnant. It usually disappears within a few months to a year after giving birth. As my pregnancy progressed month after month, I began to notice that the tingly feeling crept into the day, and slight pain started creeping into the night. In other words, it began to get worse. I could still sleep and so I pushed the matter out of my head. Until this past Wednesday. The pain crept into the day and on that night itself, I woke up to an extreme sharp and throbbing pain that went from my hand all the way down to my elbow. I tried putting my hand under cold running water hoping to numb the pain to no avail. I wanted to scream and cry but all I could do was get back into bed and whimper as I knew there was nothing anyone could do about it. I rested my right arm across my chest and the pain subsided a little, after a while, I managed to fall back to sleep.

Fortunately, the next morning was my scheduled visit to dr cool. I told him about my night. As expected (although I was still hopeful!), he confirmed that there is nothing anyone can do about it. The only other option was surgery, to which I declined, of course. And then he delivered my death sentence... he explained that it is aggravated by too many wrist movements and what he can do is write me a prescription for a wrist cast to keep my wrist still. How can I not move my wrist when typing or moving my mouse? What is a Computer Scientist who can't use a computer? He then gave me a medical certificate to cut down on my work. And so from the 1st till the 22nd of December 2011, I am allowed to only work at 50%. I was still hopeful when I came into work yesterday as I now know that wrist movements aggravates it. All I have to do is reduce my wrist movements and I will be ok, seems logical to me. Oh, how naive I was... when the evening came, the pain came as well... no amount of shaking or keeping my hand still could stop the pain. Eventually, I got up from the couch and went in search of something that could keep my wrist and hand still...

This is what I found... old and broken stockings and rolled up old socks. With evil saint's help, we managed to get it around my wrist and keep it still enough. We are engineers after all and this is really putting our studies to good use! I could finally sleep last night... as you can tell, the need for sleep conquered all the vanity that I have... the time has come for me to hang up my speed coding gloves...

Update (Thursday 01 December 2011 10:31):
Bought a proper wrist brace from the pharmacy last Friday evening. I can wear it all the time now It was not cheap though...

Cheap Chinese in 80's Land

One month ago...
* evil drow flips through her Sun Store Pharmacy magazine nonchalantly and suddenly comes across something that looks quite interesting... *
excited evil drow: ... sac-cadeau bébé... gratuit... oh!oh! Is this a free baby bag gift coupon???
evil saint: Let me see... hmmm... looks like it...
excited evil drow: So I can just go to the Sun Store Pharmacy, show them this coupon and get a free gift?
evil saint: I think so... we can try when we go to the pharmacy next time.

Two weeks ago...
* evil drow and evil saint goes shopping in the big town... *
evil drow: I want to stop by the Sun Store Pharmacy to see if I can get the free gift!
evil saint: Are you going to buy anything?
confused evil drow: No... why?
evil saint: Cos it's not so nice to ask for a free gift without buying anything, no? Why don't we go to the branch nearer to home instead?
determined evil drow: Eh... it's a free gift coupon in the magazine, so should be ok to ask for it without buying anything. Plus this is a bigger store than the one near home so they probably will have more gift bags in stock. Higher probability of getting it!
rolling-eyes evil saint: Ok, let's try...
* evil drow walks into the pharmacy with her free gift voucher and waits for her turn... *
friendly lady at the counter: Bonjour! (Good day!)
smiling evil drow: Bonjour! Vous avez... (Good day! Do you have...)
* evil drow points and shows her free gift coupon... lady at the counter stares at the voucher and scrunches up her forehead... mumbles and walks to her colleague and shows her the coupon... they speak for a while and returns back to evil drow with an unfriendly face... evil drow continues to smile politely... *
unfriendly lady at the counter: Kili kulu... kili kulu...
polite evil saint: Ah! Ah! D'accord... merci merci... bonne journée! (Ah! Ah! Ok... thank you thank you... have a good day!)
* unfriendly lady at the counter gives the coupon back to evil drow... evil drow follows evil saint out of the pharmacy *
evil drow: Ok... they don't have it issit?
evil saint: She said they don't have stock and those that were ordered are already booked by other people...
evil drow: Oh, and she didin't ask if we wanted her to order one for us? I think it's just a story... otherwise she would have offered to order one for us...
evil saint: Yeah, it's ok... we go to the branch near home... better service anyway...
evil drow: Yup!

Two days ago...
* evil drow and evil saint passes another shopping area after finishing a meeting... *
excited evil drow: Oh, I want to go into this Sun Store Pharmacy to buy some magnesium and to see if they have my free gift!!
evil saint: Ok...
* evil drow walks into the pharmacy and patiently waits in queue for her turn... while waiting, evil drow thinks to herself "Uh oh, maybe I should have picked another queue!!! This man behind the counter looks like he is in a bad mood, and he's the pharmacist for this branch too... this is going to be hard. Oh, its my turn now..." *
bad mood pharmacist: Bonjour... (Good day...)
careful evil drow: Bonjour... (Good day...)
* evil drow tentatively hands over her magnesium prescription to bad mood pharmacist... off he goes in search of the magnesium... two minutes later, bad mood pharmacist returns with a box of magnesium and starts to furiously punch numbers into some machine while evil drow wonders how to ask him for the free gift... finally bad mood pharmacist returns to evil drow and puts the box of magnesium in front of her... *
bad mood pharmacist: Vingt-deux trente franc, s'il vous plaît... (Twenty two and thirty francs, please...)
* evil drow hands over the money... bad mood pharmacist puts the money in the cashier and gives the change back to evil drow... *
careful evil drow: Er... * shows the free gift coupon... *
bad mood pharmacist: Kili kulu...
* bad mood pharmacist walks away with the coupon... evil drow guesses that he told her to wait, and so waits patiently... 2 minutes later, bad mood pharmacist returns with the gift bag in his hands and gives it to evil drow... *
bad mood pharmacist: Kili kulu... (Anything else?)
ecstatic evil drow: No... no... merci!!! Bonne journée!!! (No... no... thank you!!! Have a nice day!!!)
And so, the minute I arrived home from work that day, I opened up the gift bag and found lots of nice goodies for popcorn! Some nice items include,
  • A nice blue bag, I think it is a diaper bag...
  • 1 x Philips AVENT baby bottle
  • 1 x Philips AVENT milk/powder storage container
  • Baby wipes from Nivea
  • 1 x Filetti laundry powder for baby clothes
  • Various sachets, tubes and containers of cream and bath gel for baby
  • 1 x Baby On Board sticker for the car
In addition to the above, I also received these from the gift box given by dr cool a couple of months ago...
  • 1 x Philips AVENT milk/powder storage container
  • 1 x Bibi baby pacifier
  • 1 x Huggies newborn diaper
  • 1 x Pampers newborn diaper
  • Lots of baby wipes from Milette and Penaten

  • 1 x 300ml Evian mineral water bottle

Collection of free gifts thus far!!! All the items inside the Penaten blue bag...
This morning at breakfast...
evil drow: Can you pass me the Sun Store Pharmacy magazine? The one with Gerard Butler on the front page?
* evil saint takes the magazine and hands it to evil drow... evil drow starts flipping through it...*
evil drow: Ah, not this one... this is the one where I already took the coupon...
evil saint: Eh? You want the latest Sun Store Pharmacy magazine instead?
evil drow: Ah no, I want the one with Gerard Butler on the front page... not this copy... another copy... I have two of them... this is the one that I already took the free baby bag gift coupon...
evil saint: You have another copy of that magazine with the same coupon?
evil drow: Yeah... hmmm... if it is not here, it must be in the other magazine stack...
reality hit evil saint: Oh... please don't go back to the same pharmacy branch for the gift... that branch is in the same building as our office...
smiling evil drow: Of course I won't... I'll go to the one near home now...

The Makings Of a Nursery (Part 1)

And so evil saint has returned home and completed the assembly of the wardrobe!

popcorn's nursery is slowly beginning to take its shape... it definitely still needs more decorative touches. We shall see what can be done as the weeks amble along...
popcorn's assembled crib. Transformable into a child's bed for when he is older. popcorn's assembled wardrobe and chest. Note the little caterpillar on the crib!
The crib is positioned in the "center" of the room to enable access from all four sides. The wardrobe is positioned at the corner of the room with the highest ceiling. The chest is positioned next to the wardrobe for easy reach.

popcorn would like to say a huge thank you to his,
  • Lovely and generous little cousins from flamenco land for donating this little musical caterpillar
  • Daddy for all the laborious furniture moving and assembly work, and cleaning of the nursery

The Beginnings Of a Nursery

As I mentioned in my yesterday's post, all of popcorn's furniture was picked up by Saturday afternoon. On Sunday afternoon, after a hearty meal of raclette, evil saint began the assembly... I helped a little by holding panels, non of the heavy work. Even with my little contribution, evil saint got as far as assembling the crib and the chest with the changing table. Very good and hard work, I must say...

And so, this is how a nursery begins to form...
The entrance to the nursery. The assembly tools are stacked on the right wall. Cardboards are laid on the floor so the furniture can be assembled on it without scratching the tiles.
The assembled crib, drawer beneath the crib and chest! Pushed against the wall to make space for wardrobe assembly. The still packaged wardrobe stacked against the wall waiting to be assembled.
Will have to wait for evil saint to come home to finish assembling the wardrobe. Then we can go pick up the cheap sofa and coffee table from Ikea and the nursery's furniture will be complete!

Behold The Bread Making Monster!

I blame my latest obsession on evil saint. Had he not spotted the recipe book on making bread with the bread maker, I would not have bought it and turned into the bread making monster that I am now...
Pain Au Chocolat @ Chocolate Croissants Light Lemon Yoghurt Bread Rolls
  • Not bad for the first try
  • Tastes better than it looks
  • Must remember to always layer and roll pastry in the same direction
  • Looks and tastes good
  • Great for sandwiches and burgers
  • However, must be consumed within the first 3 days or it will get dry and crumbly
* Last Saturday morning, just before leaving for baguette land to pick up popcorn's furniture... *
evil saint: What's for lunch today?
evil drow: I was thinking of having hamburgers... we come back and all I have to do is fry the patties and assemble the burger.
evil saint: Bread again?!!??!!!
stunned evil drow: Err... ok...
complaining evil saint: We have been eating bread all week!!!! We have had smoked salmon sandwiches twice for dinner already... let's just open a can of something...
recovering evil drow: Err... ok, alright... let's eat canned food...
evil drow thinks to herself: Ok, canned food is chosen over homemade burgers... this is seriously serious... I should stop making bread... crap, I still have 4 light lemon yoghurt bread rolls. What the hell am I going to do with it now??

More Shopping For Popcorn

It has been a quite a busy 2 weeks. But let's get to the important and fun activities first. Retail Therapy aka Shopping for popcorn.

We got a call mid last week informing us that popcorn's furniture is ready to be picked up. So off we went on Friday evening and Saturday morning to baguette land to pick up the furniture. We made 2 trips because,
  • 2 trips, 2 purchases, 2 invoices which means we were below the taxable value of purchased goods per trip and invoice
  • The car could not fit all the furniture!!

All the furniture stacked up against the wall in popcorn's room. Ready for assembly!

Popcorn's cleaned and cleared room. Ready for the new and assembled furniture!

Now, did you really think that I came home with ONLY the furniture?
